Jordan Belfort is a stockbroker who throughout the premise of the movie, deals in corrupt practices and fraud, which results in his ultimate arrest by the FBI.

History

L. F. Rothschild

In 1987, Jordan Belfort is happily married to Teresa Petrillo, and has just secured a job as a Wall Street stockbroker for L.F. Rothschild, meeting a hotheaded broker named Jerry Fogel and a senior broker, Mark Hanna. Hanna takes Jordan to lunch later on that day, attracting Jordan with his lifestyle and beliefs, all fully displayed on that one afternoon by Hanna himself. Quickly, Jordan adopts the sex and drug fueled culture of Wall Street and focuses on getting every last cent from his clients, to amass his own fortune. But, on "Black Monday", the largest one day stock market drop in history, Jordan loses his job and he must find work elsewhere.

After his wife's encouragement and scanning through a newspaper, Jordan gets a job at a boiler room brokerage firm on Long Island. After getting situated by Dwayne, Jordan learns the small business specializes in penny stocks, but the earnings from it give fifty percent of the sale value. With this information, Jordan starts smooth talking his way to customers, exaggerating the stocks in their exclusivity and marginal success. Comparatively to the other employees, Jordan is extremely successful with his methods, and procures a decently high wage from it.

While eating at a diner, Jordan befriends his neighbor, Donnie Azoff, who is impressed by his wealth and 1988 Jaguar, which is outside of the lot. After impressing Donnie with his pay, Donnie quits his job to work with Jordan. The two begin to socialize and become friends, as he learns Donnie married his attractive cousin, Hildy, and do cocaine with each other. After working their way up in penny stocks, the two found their own company, Stratton Oakmont, in a leased auto body repair shop.

Stratton Oakmont

The pair begin to recruit several of Jordan's friends, Alden "Sea Otter" Kupferberg, Chester Ming, Robbie Feinberg, Nicky "Rugrat" Koskoff, Toby Welch, and Brad Bodnick (though he passed on the opportunity, due to focusing on his own drug business). Jordan trains them in his tactics and salesmanship, through the artificially augmented prices they sell to their low income customers, contributing to the major success of the company. But, after being slightly confronted by his wife, on the ethics of scamming impoverished buyers, Jordan realizes the market for richer clients could work. Altering his methods slightly, Jordan trains his employees on how to attract the one percent, in a smooth talking and urgent manner. After initial hesitations, the plan successfully works, as Jordan and his company sells massive amounts of overvalued shares, hyping up the company in the luxury and money acquired.

After an interview for an exposé in Forbes, Jordan is initially angered with the demeaning article, but Teresa reassures him. When going into work, Jordan finds hundreds of ambitious young financiers looking to join his company, due to the article. The article as well calls in the attention of Patrick Denham, peaking his interest on Jordan's activities. Jordan hires his father, Max "Mad Max" Belfort, as CFO, who constantly hard presses Jordan on his lifestyle, to little avail. Jordan as well hires Manny Riskin, to keep his crimes under raps, safeguarding the company from federal intervention. Jordan's immense success slides him into a decadent lifestyle of prostitutes and drugs, as do most of his employees.

The Duchess of Bay Ridge

In 1992, Jordan hosted a beach party at in South Hampton, for all his workers. After an invigorating speech, he goes to play pong on a pool table and take quaaludes with the guys. After taking a considerable amount of ludes, Donnie tries to talk to Jordan about Steve Madden wanting to join Stratton Oakmont, but is too high to coherently tell him, and is laughed at by the rest. Sea Otter interrupts the gang, as he tells them to come check out a guest that had just arrived.

Accompanying a man named Blair Hollingsworth, Naomi Lapaglia, a young model and Miller Lite girl, becomes the center attention of Jordan, as he is awestruck by her. Jordan quickly introduces himself to her, as a friend of her's, named Cristy accompanies him to meet her. He as well dismisses Blair rather rudely, barely acknowledging him, as he focuses on Naomi. Blair tries to get Naomi to leave, seeing Jordan's advances on her to jet ski with him, but Jordan tries to make them stay. Teresa notices Jordan and Naomi, and Hildy tries to get Jordan away from her, for Teresa's sake. Meanwhile, Donnie is jerking himself off in public to Naomi, still high on ludes, resulting in Hildy beating him in public for making a fool of himself. Blair quickly drags Naomi away in disgust, but Jordan is adamant on wanting to meet her again.

After getting Cristy to give him Naomi's number, Jordan takes Naomi out on a date. The two get along very well through the evening, and Jordan drives her back to her apartment. When reaching her apartment, Jordan tries to fluster an excuse to go to her apartment, but is unable to and is cautiously silent. Naomi finally asks if he would like to come up for tea, giving him his opportunity, and the two head up to her lounge. After meeting her dog, Rocky, Naomi leaves to freshen up, asking Jordan to light the fireplace. Jordan contemplates on how he can get her to sleep with him, but Teresa pages him, making him conflicted on whether or not he should leave. But at that moment, Naomi struts out in nothing but stockings and high-heels, seductively presenting herself to Jordan, dispelling any conflict in Jordan's mind. The duo proceed to have sex, and then after begin an impassioned affair. One night however, Teresa finds out Jordan is cheating on her, as on a limo drive home, he is caught sniffing cocaine off of Naomi's breasts. She decries him for being unfaithful, though Jordan trying to get her to calm down, but when questioned on if he loves Naomi, Jordan's silence results in her breaking down, and three days later, Jordan divorces her, feeling terrible for the whole situation.

Naomi moves into Jordan's apartment, bringing along her gay butler, Nicholas. But, one evening after coming back from shopping, Naomi enters into Nicholas' gay orgy, which is happening in the middle of their living room. Naomi discloses this to Jordan, traumatized by the experience, but as well informs him that all his money and her jewelry in the bedroom is gone. Jordan proceeds to interrogate Nicholas, with Donnie, Chester, and Sea Otter, as Nicholas evades questioning and disclosing anyone who was at the orgy. After a back and forth with Donnie, in if he was at a gay strip club, Chester and Sea Otter dangle Nicholas off the balcony, threatening to drop him if he doesn't tell them where the money is. Jordan calls the cops, mostly to make sure his friends don't kill Nicholas, but as well pays the cops to beat Nicholas up, as he is taken in.

Jordan continues to evade the legal authorities, as he secures an IPO on Steve Madden, getting even more money from the fraudulent transaction. Jordan finally decides to marry Naomi, as he proposes to her complete disbelief, but happy acceptance. After a drug and prostitute filled bachelor party, from the flight to the hotel in Vegas, Jordan marries Naomi in the Bahamas. There he meets Aunt Emma at the after-wedding party and presents Naomi with a yacht, named after her, as her wedding present. The two sale through the Caribbean and decide to buy a house in Long Island, completed with a security team and a housekeeper named Violet. Even with his new wife and house, Jordan still continues his reckless pursuits.

Belfort Estate

After 18 months, Jordan and Naomi's relationship starts to deteriorate, as Jordan's constant drug use and prostitution, affects his role as a husband and as a father. After a drug fueled night with a hooker name Venice, Naomi confronts Jordan for constantly saying her name in his sleep, and splashes a cup of water on his face. Jordan tries lying about the name, explaining that is was about investing in condominiums in Venice, California, which is met with another glass of water to the face again. Naomi obviously does not believe him and further continues to berate him on wrecking the yard the night before, due to trying to land the helicopter he came back in on his backyard. Jordan then begins berating Naomi with her expedient spending of his money, but when threatened with another glass of water, he finally tries to appease Naomi, asking for a kiss and to make up, but is splashed in the face with water yet again.

After going through his morning ritual, Jordan and Naomi play with their infant daughter, Skylar. Jordan continually tries to satisfy Naomi, as he asks again if he can get a kiss from her. Naomi, still enraged, playfully teases Jordan, telling him that he won't be able to touch "mommy" for a long time. Jordan tries to apologize again, but is cut off, as Naomi erotically tells him that she is tired of wearing panties around the house, and has decided to throw them all away. She proceeds to spread her legs, presumably not wearing anything beneath her skirt, seducing Jordan as he tries to go near her. She stops Jordan, as she tells him that he can only look not touch, conquering Jordan as he lays defeated. Jordan then realizes that Skylar has a teddy bear that as well acts as a monitor, with their security team having watched this all happen. Jordan proceeds to greet them sarcastically, as Naomi instinctively shuts her legs together in embarrassment and smacks Jordan, as she leaves humiliated.

On the day of Steve Madden's IPO being released, tensions are high, as Jordan awaits the moment. After Donnie ridicules an employee for cleaning his fish bowl, Jordan meets with Madden, as he encourages him to rile up the brokers, in celebration of their deal. Madden is subsequently ridiculed by Jordan's staff, as his rambling and impersonal attitude is bashed. Jordan quickly interjects, as he riles them up and deifies Madden, saying that selling Madden's stock will lead to their individual primordial success. This moral boost and Madden's shoes being valued very highly, results in a stark increase in value for the shares on Madden's stock.

But, as Stratton Oakmont becomes insanely prosperous from the stocks, in only a few short hours, it as well brings Jordan and his firm fully into the attention of the FBI, with Patrick Denham now on the case. After the exchange ends, Jordan receives a call from Barry Kleinman, from a video company that filmed his wedding, asking if he can send a copy at the request of the FBI. Jordan, panicking, gets information on Denham from Bo Dietl, who urges Jordan to forget that he is even being investigated, to sooth his worries and prevent any further problems. Jordan does not take this lightly, as he contrarily does the opposite of Dietl's advice.

Jordan invites Denham to the "Naomi" days later, hoping to create some compromise with him. Jordan flaunts his wealth and status to Denham and his partner, Agent Hughes, as well as trying to placate that he is innocent in this debacle. Jordan tries to get more information on their case, playing it off as small talk, while revealing to Denham that he has done an intense background check on him. Jordan tries to appeal to Denham, trying to get him to disclose or halt the case, but Denham stands quaintly firm from caving in. Jordan resorts to subtly bribing Denham, as he inquires on Denham's financial status, trying to wager off the money Denham could make working for him in Wall Street. Denham entices Jordan's attempts at appeal, as Hughes has been recording their conversation, with Jordan almost legally confessing that he tried to bribe a FBI agent. Jordan, frustrated and defeated, kicks the two off his boat, as Denham laughingly claims how he will be a hero in his office when the bureau seizes Jordan's yacht. Jordan realizes that he needs to hide his money from Denham and the FBI, and needs to do so away from the country.

Switzerland

In 1993, Jordan and Naomi pack their money, as Jordan is planning to go to Switzerland, where a friend of Rugrat, Jean-Jacques Saurel, will open an account for him. After a hectic night of partying and drug abuse, Jordan, Donnie, and Rugrat board the plane for Switzerland, though Donnie and Jordan are too high for comprehension. After sexually assaulting an air hostess and being tied down to his seat by the captain, Jordan wakes up as the group arrives to Switzerland. In Geneva, Jordan has a meeting with Saurel, where he inquires about he banks safety and policies. After an awkward exchange, Saurel informs that he will set up an account for Jordan, only if he sets it up under another person's name, for safety from investigation of their laundering. Realizing the person needs to be European, Jordan pays a visit to Aunt Emma, in Britain. The two take a walk in Hyde park, with Aunt Emma graciously accepting the account, as the risk invigorates her. Though, the two get into a minor misunderstanding that turns awkward, as after a conversation on Jordan's drug abuse, both believe that each other is hitting on them. Content with the plan, Jordan goes back to New York to start smuggling the cash with Naomi, but not before they have sex on the pile of money in their bedroom.

Jordan, Naomi, and Donnie enlist Brad and his wife, Chantalle, to move the money into Switzerland, as they plan to tape all the money onto Chantalle and send her off to Switzerland. After realizing that they are going to need multiple trips and her in-laws to move the money, Donnie as well asks for Brad to do a trip with his money. Brad, already irritated by Donnie's attitude and arrogance, argues with Jordan privately, only to be eavesdropped by an enraged Donnie. After smack talking Brad, Brad knocks out Donnie, though Jordan will get Brad to later accept the deal of moving Donnie's money. The plan goes successfully, as Aunt Emma gets a stash into to Geneva, while Chantalle successfully gets her family from Europe to do trips back and forth to Switzerland.

Donnie and Brad in the meanwhile meet up to hand over the money for the next trip. Donnie initially seeming to be sincere towards Brad, trying to apologize to a cold recuperation by Brad. But after Donnie's constant heavy handed insults, ending with a remark on Brad's wife, Brad loses his temper and tries to pull a gun on Donnie, with a police patrol coming to intervene. Donnie bolts away, leaving Brad and his suitcase full of money, to be apprehended and taken away. Donnie drives away from the scene, with Brad enraged and cursing at him, as Donnie recedes into a state of worry, with the entire scam being on the brink of collapsing, due to his irritable actions.

The Lemmon 714 Quaaludes

Donnie calls up Jordan to do quaaludes with each other, wanting to escape his anxiety with drugs and shelter Jordan from his idiotic actions. He presents some rare Lemmon 714 quaaludes, "Lemons", which are described by Jordan as "the holy grail of quaaludes", which were outlawed in the 80's, being very valuable and potent. The two go to Jordan's estate, preparing themselves physically and mentally for the possible high they are going to get. The two take one each, but after an extended period of time of no action, two are bored out of their minds, taking he whole bottle by the end. Donnie suggests their duds and while they do some exercising in the mansion's gym, Naomi informs Jordan that Dietl is on the line. Dietl informs Jordan to go out to talk privately on a pay line, so Jordan heads out to the Brookville country club, a couple of miles away.

Dietl informs Jordan that Brad has been arrested and that Denham is tapping Jordan's house, but coincidentally, Jordan starts becoming lucidly high, as the ludes had a delayed fuse, due to the storage time. Jordan enters into a deranged and immobile state, being unable to speak coherently and being unable to walk at all. The effects as well are effecting Donnie, as Naomi frantically calls, as he is trying to call Saurel in his deluded state, which could jeopardize the entire scheme due to the FBI listening into the phone lines. Jordan tries painfully to get back to the house, driving his Lamborghini back tot he mansion, believing he didn't even get a scratch on his car. Jordan flails into the house, as Naomi guides him into the kitchen, as Donnie tries to tell Saurel that he wants put his money into the laundering scheme, incomprehensibly. Jordan tries to rip the phone away, as Donnie regresses away, oblivious to the information Jordan knows, relenting to Jordan as he gets tangled in the phone line. Jordan then angrily questions Donnie on Brad's arrest, knowing Donnie had a part in it, which makes Donnie become feral, as he runs over to a platter to stuff his face with food, but starts gagging and chokes on chunks of ham. Naomi tries to save him and get Jordan to help her, as she does not know what to do, so Jordan comically reaches for a small stash of cocaine in a kitchen drawer, and intakes it all, to the TV playing "Popeye the Sailor Man". Jordan immediately is reinvigorated and applies CPR rapidly on Donnie, saving him as he coughs ham onto the floor, while Jordan passes out on the couch from the stress.

Next morning, Jordan is awaken to two police officers wanting to question him on the night before, as he is taken outside to see the carnage he has placed on his car, with the previous night's trip giving him delusions of his cars unspoiled nature. With no evidence that he was behind the wheel and no one being hurt during Jordan's drug fueled driving, Jordan is let go from arrest or further questioning. Meanwhile, Brad is jailed for contempt, but due to quickly disposing his gun before being arrested and unwilling to rat out Jordan, and begrudgingly Donnie, he is let go after some months. With retrospect on the events Jordan has been experiencing, Manny and his father try to pull Jordan away from the company, due to his reckless behavior and almost fatal run ins. Jordan is hesitant, but Manny tries to explain that if he stays, Denham will have him on a leash, and won't be free from the FBI. Jordan looks out to his daughter and newborn son, Parker, with Naomi, realizing that if he leaves the firm, he could finally live his life in peace.

The Bullpen

Jordan comes to Stratton Oakmont hesitantly, as his workers seem to know of his supposed retirement plans, being despondent in general. Jordan gets their attention, awaiting with his father, Donnie, and Manny, as he makes the announcement of his supposed departure. With the room getting emotional, with Jordan complimenting the time he has spent on bettering the lives of his employees, exampled by Kimmie Belzar, as he is conflicted on whether to leave or not. As he tells the company of her story, he stays silent as he contemplates his next actions, finally telling the crowd, that he isn't leaving. As he screams in confidence of his decision, the brokers become wild, with Donnie and Max being mildly upset and bewildered. Meanwhile, Denham gets the news of Jordan's continued role in his firm, smiling in reassurance that his case is still on.

After taking the "Naomi" on a sex fueled party with hookers and lap dancers, Jordan thanks and apologizes to Brad, for not squealing on him and tells him, that he never needs to talk to or deal with Donnie ever again. He even tries to repay Brad for his time in jail, but Brad denies the offer, as he was now out and free to enjoy the party.

A couple of days later, in 1996, subpoenas are issued to every employee under Stratton Oakmont, as they must attend court to be questioned and interrogated, for the company's possible illegal actions. None of the members talk or give any incrimination against the firm or Jordan, and as a result are quickly let go and disposed of, freeing them from legal authority for the time being. Soon after, though they are not allowed to leave the country, Jordan heads out to Italy with Donnie and their wives, on the "Naomi". When on shore, Jordan and Donnie learn Madden has been selling his stock off, which Jordan mostly owned illegally, due to fears and hesitations from Jordan's predicament and situation with the FBI. Jordan plans on sailing back to America, after Madden is unresponsive to Donnie's calls, to devalue the shares and ruin Madden's company financially. He is stopped though, by the sight of Naomi crying, being comforted by Hildy, as Jordan inquires what happened. Naomi sobbingly tells him that Aunt Emma is dead, which troubles Jordan on the fact that her name is under his money, meaning the account may be in jeopardy, dismaying him for reasons divergent to Naomi's own sorrow.

Jordan quickly calls Saurel on the status of the account, with Saurel telling him that it is completely secure and Emma actually naming Jordan as the successor to the funds in the bank. But, the only way for Jordan to inherit the account, is by him going to Switzerland and signing an agreement of acquisition for the account, in three days. Jordan quickly rouses the captain to sail to Monaco, where Jordan will drive to Switzerland to meet with Saurel. Naomi is naturally confused on the plan, as she believes they should go to London for the funeral, but Jordan tries consulate that Aunt Emma will still be dead by the time they arrive, and now they should go to Monaco. The captain tries to warn of the incoming storm, feeling that it won't be safe for travel, but Jordan assures him that it will be fine.

The yacht embarks towards Mediterranean Sea, where the storm is extremely hazardous, contrary to Jordan's initial reassurances, as the waves violently surround the "Naomi". Jordan, Donnie, and Naomi are lodged in the front, as the Captain tries to call for rescue, as he tries to keep the boat from going under. Jordan, afraid he is going to die, tries to get Donnie to get the ludes downstairs, so he can at least die high. Donnie is initially hesitant, due to the possibility that the lower half of the boat is already submerged, but is pressured to go down to the pool of water filling the lower deck. Donnie finds the ludes and gives them to Jordan, who leaves Naomi alone to be almost jolted by the incoming waves. After taking a capsule, a giant wave crashes onto the yacht, capsizing the boat, as the crew get onto a safety raft, leaving the "Naomi" to sink. The captain efforts to call for assistance is ultimately successful, as an Italian cruiser picks them up. As Naomi and Hildy dance with the sailors, Jordan looks outside a porthole, as he sees the rescue plane sent to save them explode, being later on explained as a seagull flying into one of the engines. Jordan sees this as an act of God, being a warning to sober up and change.

Infomercials

Taking the "sign" to heart, by 1998, Jordan sober ups his act, quitting drugs and taking a more active role as a father and husband. He as well starts doing infomercials, on the success and ways of his business. Unfortunately, Jordan and his schemes are unfolded, as he is arrested by the FBI, on television while airing a commercial. It is found out that Rugrat and Saurel were in Miami, and were arrested due to criminal charges for laundering money for Rocky Aoki, unrelated to Jordan's case. But, Saurel in a plea deal, rats out Chantalle, who actually had an affair with Saurel in her time in Geneva, leading to Jordan's money trips coming into play, being publicized to American authorities.

Jordan is placed with a bail of ten million dollars, by his repeated offense to fraud and laundering. Jordan is subsequently placed under house arrest, with Donnie meeting up with him on his current predicament. Jordan's life seems to be shattering, as his bail requires him to sell his house and most of his valuables, his relationship to Naomi is growing distant, and is imprisoned to his house. Donnie reassures him that they will fight this together, strengthening their bond as brothers in this fight. Jordan's lawyer, Nolan Dagger, schedule a meeting with the attorneys and Denham, who as well wish to make a deal. Jordan believes that he is ratting on people. Denham's colleagues reassure Jordan that he need not do the full twenty years if he cooperates. Jordan is still hesistant, to which Denham, who is at the end of his rope and fed up with Jordan's immaturity, bluntly tells Jordan that this is being a rat and that Jordan has no choice in the matter. Reluctantly, Jordan agrees.

Jordan discusses the matter with Naomi in the night, who seems to be very emotionally detached from everything, as Jordan tries to sooth her worries on the matter. The reason for the distance is likely that she married him for money and the writing is on the wall that he will soon be penniless. He tries to play it a menial matter and that they will either get their money back or he will get a new way to get filthy rich, but Naomi's distant nature is cold towards Jordan's attempts. Finally, Jordan tries to get Naomi to make love to him, as he kisses and pulls her down to the bed, much to Naomi's apparent rebutting. Jordan is able to overpower her, as the two proceed to have sex, contrasting Jordan's intimate nature to Naomi's uninterested and unwilling attitude to submit to Jordan. She then grudingly remarks that if Jordan is so hellbent on copulating with her that she should treat it like it is the last time they will ever have sex. The pair lay down together, with Jordan's spirits lifted saying that is just what he needed in this difficult time and that they had not made love for a long time. Jordan's elation is cut short, as Naomi tells Jordan that this is the last time they will ever have sex. She goes on to say she meant it both in spirit and in fact, as she wants a divorce. Jordan confused, as the two just had sex together, tries to reason with her, but Naomi is simply nonreciprocal. He questions in anger why would her love be tied into him now being under federal pressure and being caught, but she simply passes it off and doesn't fully answer. She tells him that she will allow visitation for their kids if he agrees to her demands, but Jordan, betrayed and enraged, tells her that he will not allow her to take custody of his children and that she won't take his kids away from him. The two get into a fight, as Jordan slaps Naomi and proceeds to wreck the house, with a distraught but emotional Naomi degrading Jordan for being a lunatic, telling him that he will never be able to see his children ever again. Jordan, still in a fit of anger, goes to Skylar's room, socking Naomi as she tries to pull him back. Jordan picks his scared daughter off from her bed, as he races along the stairs towards his car, with Naomi trying to pull herself back up to stop him. Jordan enters into his car with Skylar, right as Naomi and Violet try to get her out of the car, but Jordan reverses the car out of the garage, but loses control and crashes into a concrete slab. Naomi quickly goes to pull her daughter out, as Jordan sits exhausted and hurt from the crash.

Jordan meets with Denham, ready to sign on the offer, as he is wired and sent back to Stratton Oakmont, to get his first conspirator, Donnie, convicted. The company is ecstatic with his return, believing he has striven through his hardships with the FBI, much to the contrary. Jordan and Donnie meet up, as they talk about Steve Madden and their problems, for only Jordan to slip a piece of paper to Donnie, telling him to not convict himself. Donnie keeps the note, as the two continue to talk, as Jordan convicts other members of Stratton Oakmont.

The next morning, Jordan is awoken by Violet, to Denham and two other agents placing him under arrest. Denham disappointingly reveals the card Jordan slipped to Donnie. It was unknown how Agent Denham came into possession of that piece of paper, but strongly suggested that Donnie reported this to the FBI in the hopes of getting himself a lighter sentence. Jordan is arrested and taken in for his breach in agreement, as the FBI head into Stratton Oakmont to arrest dozens of workers and employees, as Stratton Oakmont is shut down and defunct. Donnie looks on towards all of this, as he tries to delete as many files that could incriminate him, but even with his acquired found evidence, he is sent to prison for four years. Jordan's trial is held in 1999, as he convicted for three years, though his lawyer tries to reason that his part in evidence used against many of his many brokers, was essential. Jordan is sent to Nevada, though initially scared, becomes reassured by the mundane and general placid environment of jail. His imprisonment is not well shown save for a scene where he is teaching the other prisoners how to play tennis in the prison's exercise yard.

Jordan, after release in the very beginning of the 2000's, becomes a motivational speaker, going around the globe to talk about how to be successful in the art of selling. In one conference, in Auckland, as he is presented by the host as one of the baddest people on the planet, welcoming him to the crowd of eager New Zealand attendees. Jordan starts off the conference, by pulling out a ballpoint pen, wanting the front of the audience to sell him on it. He continues down the line of participants, as he shuffles down the line for someone to convince him, as onlookers in the back look on transfixed to him.
